In order to have healthy teeth, a good oral hygiene is not sufficient. A healthy diet, rich in vitamins and minerals contributes to maintain heathy theet until old age. Nutrition and teeth are two interdependent elements, quality of food determins the dental structure, and the integrity of the teeth facilitates a healthy diet.

The foods we eat interact with the microbes and bacteria from our oral cavity, leading to the formation of the bacterial plaque, especially if we fail to brush our teeth after eating. The plaque in combination with sugar and starch found in many foods (especially the smaller ones), forms an acid that attacks the tooth enamel, resulting in detal cavities.

Raw fruits and vegetables are beneficial to the health of teeth and gums. We refer here especially to the crunchiest ones, such as carrot, apple, celery, broccoli or cabbage. They have cellulose, very effective in "cleaning" naturally the teeth, removing the adherent bacteria and food debris.

Nuts eaten right after meals stimulate the action of phosphates, are rich in Calcium and Magnesium, which increase the teeth resistance.

Kiwi, basil, sweet potatoes are rich in vitamin C and cause the production of collagen, which helps to strengthen the gums.

The snacks between meals and the habit of drinking soft drinks are the most common risk factors for tooth decay. Another cause may be eating disorders, such as bulimia, which involves high consumption of food, followed by vomiting or post-laxation and diuretic consumption.

Foods to avoid if you want white teeth:

  • coffee
  • tea
  • chocolate
  • blueberries

Brush twice a day with the right toothpaste and use a dental floss once a day or another product that can remove plaque and food particles from between the teeth and under the gum line.
