Dental scaling

02 JULY

Brushing, dental floss, mouthwash helps to remove the plaque but not completely. The dental plaque and the appearance of tartar are unavoidable that is why scaling is recommended.

Scaling is a procedure that helps to remove tartar from teeth and prevent caries. Despite the fact that it is a simple and painless procedure, many patients are avoinding it during their dental hygiene, being influenced by unjustified fears that can lead to serious dental problems.

There are two types of tartar: supragingival ("above the gum") and subgingival ("below the gum").

The tartar is formed mainly on the inner surface of the lower teeth, on the outer surface of the upper molars, and on the surfaces of dental bridges dental prostheses, as well as in areas which are not easily accessible.

Doctors recommend a scaling procedure at about once every six months, but there are situations where professional teeth cleaning is needed earlier. If the teeth are very crowded or have a predisposition to accumulate increased amounts of tartar on teeth (due to predominantly faulty nutrition, for example), the dentist may recommend a scalling procedure once every three months.

Scalling involves a brusshing procedure of the entire surface of the teeth from its root, eliminating gum inflammation. If the soft tissue is sensitive and inflamed, a local anesthetic will be administrated to numb the gums. If the teeth are sensitive before or after professional cleaning, it is advisable to use a desensitizing toothpaste.

Unlike manual scalling, modern ultrasound technology offers maximum precision, a more efficient removal of tartar, better patient comfort, and faster treatment.

Today, most experts use both methods with a mixed approach for better results, combining ultrasound and manual ultrasonography.

Pain after scaling is sometime experienced by patients, being most common among those with significant deposits of tartar, dental hypersensitivity, or those for whom tartar has caused inflammation of the soft parts. The dentist may recommend an anti-inflammatory to those who have associated oral affections, where the pain following scalling procedure is intense.

After a professional brushing, the teeth get a whiter color, a healthy and appealing look that will surely determin you come back to the dentist!
